square america

Swim_2_square
i could spend all day perusing square america's site via swiss miss. collector, martin johnson, has spent umpteem hours and $$$ gathering and sorting old photos. on his site he has curated them into galleries with themes on summer, smoke, guns, love, dance, sleep and many more. a must see for any lover of vintage snapshops.

south dakota vacation

Sdak4faces
ah, we are back and what says sd more than the four faces. and what says family vacation more than smiling parents and bored children. i think this is my 3rd time visiting mt rushmore and it is always so amazing and impressive. they have built a beautiful visitor center and museum since i last visited and is worth a walk through.
Firecracker_mtrush
this was part of an invitation to celebrate the first face (lincoln) being somwhat finished. i loved the way they wrote directly on the photo and who can resist the firecracker tied onto the photo with red, white and blue ribbon. i had to chuckle as you know that it is a real firecracker. today if you received this in the mail, i'm sure there would be much discussion about how unsafe and dangerous it is. ah, good ol' 1930.
Cowboy_pic
this fun print hung in our cabin in keystone. i didn't get an old time photo taken, as the one place we saw had only three sets to choose from; a bad parlour, a cheesy jail scene complete with someone holding a frame size version of bars (so lame) and of course the saloon shot. none of which tempted me.
H_badlands
h. in the badlands.
O_badlands
me and o. in the badlands. yikes, it was hot! well, that is vacation #2 with children, h did a lot better than our first vacation, of course it's so hard for an 8 month old to be strapped down for hours on end in the car, but i'm so glad we made the trip.

J_khoshbin_june
mixed media artist, jennifer khoshbin recently caught my eye via (ohhhhh i can't remember?). this texas gal lists su blackwell as one of her inspirations and one can see the influence but she definately makes them her own! gives me the urge to get back into book making!

artist, pal fried

Pal_fried
the above pic is from the latest FLOR catalog and i fell in love with this parisian 50's woman with her red capelet, dark elizabeth taylor hairdo and blue ribbon at her waist. who painted this, i asked? well as i googled "fried pal" (what i could discern on the painting), i would find out that his name is actually pal fried. he was a hungarian painter who lived and painted in paris, mostly ballerinas & nudes. get the below original painting on EBAY for $2000!
Fried pal_yellow
special thanks to gabrielle blair from design mom. she is a guest editor on mighty junior and featured "audrey at the library" in one of her posts. swell! and thanks!

old time photo

Oldpic_family
oh how i love these old time fake photos. that's me in the velvet dress sitting on my dad's knee. i love that my dad looks perfect for the era with his mustache and my mother couldn't look more regal and beautiful. my brother is still wearing his shorts but they strategically placed him behind the clock to hide it. baby sis looks so sweet and my sister g. is ready for a stroll with her umbrella. next week i hope to replicate this picture with j. h. and o. as our little family is heading to south dakota for a week long vacation. i fear that h. will enjoy dressing up as a cowboy but when it comes to sitting ???? well, i'll keep you posted.

dresden plate quilt

Dresden_red
this is a quilt my great grandma started and was passed to my grandma and now my wonderful mother has completed the circle (no pun intended) and finished this beautiful quilt.
Dresden_brown
this is my favorite "plate". i love how the browns go into the green. oh, if i could lay my hands on all that cool vintage fabric.
Dresden_mix
here is a "plate" that my mom added pieces from her own scrap arsenal. there is fabric in there that i recognize from a maternity top that my mom wore to doll clothes from my childhood. such fun! i love the way quilts can tell stories.
