what could have richer themes and images then the classic story "wizard of oz". the uber talented, jessica hische taught a 5 week class at the university of arts in philadelphia- the assignment...create book cover, end papers, titlepage and bookplate for the wizard of oz. I love the vintage feel of the above illustration and toto pulling back the velvet curtain to reveal the farm and tornado.
the students name is to the right of the cover. and what is that lovely script, you ask? why it is none other than "NELLY florish script" by another talented lady, crystal kluge of tart workshop!
what does this post have to do with surfing, nothing...and eddie vedder, EVERYTHING! my confessions should also be labeled obsessions. my latest obsession is eddie vedder and the pearl jam song, "just breathe". i love this SONG! it makes me swoon. all i want to do is sit back with a glass of wine and have sir edwards voice and lyrics just drip all over me. i walk around the house singing it all the time and yesterday h. said "stop singing that song, i hate it!" perhaps not the song, just the fact that his mommy has forgotten that other music exists. like any teenage girl in the early 90's, he made me swoon with his grunge/flannel antics...well mister, you are still rockin' the casbah at age 45 and this 37 year old still thinks you got it!
last night my friend amy, me and the boys visited the pizza farm in stockholm, wisconsin. every tuesday in the spring to late fall this family stokes up the wood fire grill and makes pizza made from their own home grown vegetables and animals. it is a magical place. the entrance... the menu, we tried the "happy pigs" pizza and spinach and feta. the crust is a wonderful; a whole wheat chewy delight. the cheese is gooey freshness. it wouldn't be a true farm without animals....sheep with their new spring lambs. the one ewe kept stomping her feet (i guess i was too close to the fence)... this picture doesn't do the size of this bull justice. he was HUGE! happy pigs... when we approached the goats, this one came running and then preceded to climb the fence! baby o. is running toward the bull, h. is hanging back, as usual... it is a wonderful place. families are picnicking all over the grounds, a young group of friends were on a picnic blanket with glasses of red wine...the weather was windy and rainy and a bunch of people were still there. the above building is the "chicken coop" where one can dine with a roof. farm living at its finest...
